i feel like "cold, pretentious, misanthropic, hyper-technical, misogynist, drug-addled but finally straight-sounding jazzy soft-rock with mediocre vocals" is an objectively correct description of steely dan. and yet, people love steely dan.
i just feel like people who love steely dan are the same who have read only one book in the past ten years, but it's "being and time" by martin heidegger, something you'd never understand because you're a mere mortal.
like imagine if i assembled a team of crack jazz musicians in the most sophisticated recording studio in the world and was like "okay we're just gonna make fun of disco now, this song is called the fez"
